Privacy Policy

1. Introduction

Aviation English (“the App”) is an aviation English exam preparation application designed to help users practice the English language skills used in aviation proficiency assessments. The App records your spoken responses, converts them to text using your device’s built-in speech recognition, and uses artificial intelligence to analyze your speech and provide useful feedback to help you improve. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information.

By using the App, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Device Identifier

We generate a random, anonymous identifier (UUID) for each device. This identifier is stored locally on your device using Apple’s Keychain and is used solely to associate your usage data with your device. It does not contain any personally identifiable information.

2.2 Voice Recordings and Transcripts

To provide speaking practice and feedback, the App requests access to your device’s microphone to record your spoken responses. Your speech is converted into text (a transcript) using Apple’s built-in iOS speech recognition feature. Depending on your device, iOS version, and language, this speech recognition may be performed on your device or by Apple’s servers; this processing is handled by Apple and governed by Apple’s privacy policy.

The resulting transcript is then sent to OpenAI to be analyzed by artificial intelligence, which generates feedback on your aviation English (such as pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and fluency). The transcript and resulting feedback are stored locally on your device so you can review your progress. We do not store your voice recordings or transcripts on our own servers.

2.3 Usage Analytics

We collect anonymous usage data through Firebase Analytics and Firebase Firestore to understand how the App is used and to improve the user experience. This includes:

  • App open events — when you open the App and your app version
  • Module interactions — which practice modules you view and how many practice sessions you start
  • Session completion data — whether a speaking session was completed and the score or rating achieved
  • Tab navigation — which sections of the App you visit (History, Progress)
  • Paywall interactions — how many times the upgrade screen is viewed
  • Subscription status — whether you are a free or Pro user, and how many free credits remain

2.4 Purchase Information

If you purchase Aviation English Pro, the transaction is processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. We use RevenueCat to verify your purchase status. We do not collect, store, or have access to your payment details, credit card information, or Apple ID.

2.5 Practice Results

Your practice results (transcripts, scores, feedback, and session history) are stored locally on your device using Core Data. This stored history is not transmitted to any server; only the temporary processing described in Section 2.2 involves your device’s speech recognition and OpenAI.

3. Information We Do NOT Collect

  • Your name, email address, or any contact information
  • Your location or GPS data
  • Photos, contacts, or any content from your device (other than the microphone audio you choose to record)
  • Health data
  • Advertising identifiers (we do not serve ads)

Your voice recordings are used only to transcribe your speech and generate language feedback. We do not create voiceprints, and we do not use your voice to identify you or for any biometric identification purpose.

4. How We Use Your Information

We use the collected data exclusively to:

  • Provide AI feedback — transcribe your spoken responses and analyze them to generate personalized feedback on your aviation English
  • Improve the App — understand which modules are most used and identify areas for improvement
  • Monitor performance — detect technical issues and ensure the App functions correctly
  • Manage subscriptions — verify Pro purchase status and manage free credit allocation
  • Analyze engagement — understand user retention and session completion patterns

We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or selling to third parties. We do not use your voice recordings or transcripts to train our own models.

5. Third-Party Services

The App uses the following third-party services:

Service Purpose Privacy Policy
Apple Speech Recognition (Apple) Convert your voice recordings into text Apple Privacy Policy
OpenAI Analyze transcripts and generate feedback OpenAI Privacy Policy
Firebase Analytics (Google) Anonymous usage analytics Google Privacy Policy
Firebase Firestore (Google) Anonymous usage data storage Google Privacy Policy
RevenueCat Subscription and purchase management RevenueCat Privacy Policy

Apple’s speech recognition processes your audio to produce a transcript, and OpenAI processes that transcript to generate feedback. The remaining services may collect technical data such as device type, operating system version, and app version. No directly identifying information (such as your name or email) is shared with these services.

6. Data Retention

  • Voice recordings: Used only to generate your transcript via Apple’s speech recognition, and not retained on our servers. Any processing or retention by Apple is governed by Apple’s privacy policy.
  • Transcripts sent to OpenAI: Sent only to generate your feedback and not retained on our servers. Any retention by OpenAI is governed by OpenAI’s privacy policy.
  • Local data (transcripts, feedback, scores, preferences): Stored on your device until you delete the App or manually clear data from Settings.
  • Anonymous usage data (Firestore): Retained for analytics purposes. Since no personal information is attached, this data cannot be linked to your identity.
  • Purchase records: Managed by Apple and RevenueCat according to their respective retention policies.

7. Data Security

We take reasonable measures to protect your information:

  • The device identifier is stored securely in Apple’s Keychain with kSecAttrAccessibleAfterFirstUnlock protection.
  • All data transmitted to our third-party services (including OpenAI, Firebase, and RevenueCat) uses industry-standard TLS/SSL encryption.
  • No directly identifying information is collected or stored.

8. Children’s Privacy

The App is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with data, please contact us and we will promptly delete it.

9. Your Rights

Since we do not collect directly identifying information, there is typically no personal data to access, modify, or delete. However:

  • You can decline microphone or speech recognition access at any time in your device settings (note that speaking practice features require these to function).
  • You can delete all local practice data (transcripts, feedback, scores) from the App’s Settings screen.
  • You can uninstall the App to remove all locally stored data.
  • You can contact us with any privacy-related requests.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected by the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
